Caitlin Hepworth in conversation with Amanda Tattam, discussing Caitlin’s recent journey to Eastern Turkey, with particular focus on the sites Göbekli Tepe, Sanliurfa, Antakya, and Gaziantep. Caitlin also shares five key learning highlights of her experience in the recent International Adana Mosaic Symposium directed by Maestro Giulio Menossi.

This online event was presented just prior to the catastrophic earthquake in Feb 2023. The sites discussed here have all survived.

Caitlin interviews Tasmanian artist Rachel Bremner about her practice and creative process as part of our adults online mentoring group.
Rachel is one of Australia’s leading mosaic artists and the person who first taught Caitlin about andamento.

​This month we welcome three guests to the Share and Connect platform. John Botica (New Zealand), Vicky Bush (Blue Mountains Australia) and Heather Vollans (Canada) all work in different ways with one common thread, their love of natural materials.

Pebble Mosaic artist John Botica works with hand selected pebbles from his adopted homeland of New Zealand to create intricate large-scale mosaics featuring iconic native flora and fauna. John works solo, selecting, turning, and placing each pebble becoming immersed in an intuitive relationship with the material and enjoying the serendipity and mindfulness of the practice.

​Heather Vollans is best known for her incredible work with stone, a love affair that has held her creative attention for the past 10 years. This focussed examination was intensified when heather downsized her studio. The silver lining to this reduction in ‘stuff’, is that it created space for an intensified look at the materials she really wanted to focus on. This along with her inspirational time with Scottish mentor Dugald MacInnes saw Heather take her work to a new level.

​Australian artist Vicky Bush sources inspiration from her strong ties to land, specifically to the Blue Mountains National Park where her studio is nestled in amongst the gumtrees. Vicky shares pivotal aspects of her evolution as a mosaic artist which has taken her around the globe and back again on her educational journey. These cumulative experiences have led Vicky to her current work on aerial landscapes built primarily of natural materials.

In this month’s Share and Connect we are discussing Collaboration.
In the changing world we have all needed to find new ways to be, create and connect and collaborate. Each of the artists presenting has collaborated in a different way.

​Kate Kerrigan – USA has taken a 5 month road trip around different states connecting and collaborating with 540 individuals so far as part of her ‘Piecing us Together’ mosaic project. Kate took to the road during a time of uncertainty which gave rise to themes of unity, inclusion, connection, relationships and in-person contact. The timing was everything, bringing people together in intimate groups, connecting through art, bridging the divide and bringing something positive to a damaged world.

​Kristin Wohlers and Kate Jenkins from South Australia were inspired to work together through their mutual love of the environment. Kristin an accomplished mosaic artist, and Kate a skilled Potter and visual artist, give us insights into their collaborative processes through discussion of their large scale outdoor chaise-lounge titled ‘Don’t get too Comfortable’ and their collaborative exhibition ‘Bird Talk’ 2015.

​Marian Shapiro and Caitlin Hepworth are both mosaic artists from the Blue Mountains west of Sydney who are reaching the end of their second collaboration. In this Share and Connect they will talk about the making of Australia for the Ruins in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania as well as share the development of their new series ‘Safety Net?’ for their upcoming exhibition at the Hawkesbury Regional Gallery in April 2023. With the majority of both projects created during the pandemic, Marian and Caitlin have orchestrated much of their collaborative process remotely, working together but apart.

In this month’s Share and Connect we are discussing CREATIVE INSPIRATION.
I interview amazing three artists who draw their inspiration from completly different places. 

Galia works in experimental ways with traditional materials as well as gemstones and minerals to capture the essence of place time and sound. In this work Galia was inspired by Peter Sculthorpe’s epic composition Kakadu. She has experimented creating textures directly in the surface of the thinset with found materials, seed pods & grasses in a gestural interpretation of the musical composition.

Saskia is a woman of the world, speaking 6 languages, living across continents and working in both contemporary and ancient techniques. Saskia has recently completed her MFA and shares her creative inspiration stemming from ancient culture, the Mediterranean, and human connection.

​Sally Zylberberg shares her creative inspiration with us as she discusses highlights from her extensive body of work. Sally previous trained professionally in ceramics and then spent many years working primarily as a sculptor before beginning to integrate mosaic into her work. Sally’s work is personal and symbolic and narrates life’s journeys and challenges with ever present optimism.
