LEVEL 3 UNIT 1 : VALUE & THE COLOUR TREE

In this unit we introduce the Munsell Colour Tree and the three dimensions of colour Hue, Value and Chroma.
In particular we focus on Value, because it is the dimension of colour that does the heavy lifting. It is famously quoted that colour gets all the credit.. but value does all the work!|

Before colour can work well, light and dark need to make sense. By simplifying colour down to light and dark, you develop stronger control over form and avoid common pitfalls that can flatten or confuse an image.

The technical sample isolates Value and demonstrates how hue and chroma play tricks on you.. while the extended study uses value and andamento  to build a resolved form with a light source.

In this colourful and eye opening theory presentation Caitlin introduces three dimensional colour space through the explanation of the Munsell Colour Tree. 

In this Lesson we explore Value by through the creation of a small gradation sample in colourful tesserae.
Removing Hue and Chroma to focus on Value, allows students to understand the dimensions of colour in isolation. 

In Lesson 2 we begin planning our Sphere Mosaic study. Students learn about the effect of light on a spherical form and identify different areas of shadow before exploring the form through drawing. 

Lesson 4 introduces our first palette building exercise of the curriculum so far as we build a greyscale palette in 10 values. 

Our final lesson of Unit 1 includes the building of our Sphere Mosaic study.
Students combine andamento and value to create the effect of a three dimensional form on a two dimensional surface.
