LEVEL 3 UNIT 3 : HARMONIOUS HUES

In Unit 3, we continue to explore the Munsell Colour System by investigating harmonious hues that are adjacent to one another in the hue circle.  You’ll see how different harmonious blends work together, connecting to suggest different moods in mosaic works.

We start with a harmonious gradation, working in three hues and five values, before exploring the chromatic scales of green and yellow green.

The study for this unit is a Pear. We learn to work in contemporary, value based andamento and advance our palette building skills using comparative colour.

We continue our journey into colour space, further exploring the effect of harmonious colour in mosaics. We discuss how harmonious colour can create and support mood in mosaics works. This is demonstrated through explicit examples which are supported by colourful animations.

In this lesson we extend our exploration of hue and value through the creation of a small harmonious gradation in three hues and five values.
Students learn a system which focusses on colour seeding, placement, scale and contrast to build gradations with smooth transitions.

In Lesson 2 we begin planning our Pear Mosaic study. In this exercise we create our andamento based on value instead of form. This is a slightly different approach to Units 1 and 2 and moves towards contemporary andamento.

This fun exercise teaches students to see the variation in value and chroma within singular hues through exploring the chromatic scales of Hues 5G and 5GY.
This eye training exercise is extremely valuable for all artists. 

In Lesson 4, students allocate values to the pear using a value card, before building a comparative values palette working across multiple hues. A basic comparative values palette is the starting point to future mosaic colour freedom and more complex palette planning. 

Our final lesson of Unit 3 involves building our Pear Mosaic study.
Students combine andamento, hue, chroma and value to create the effect of a three dimensional pear.
