LEVEL 2 : UNIT 2 - FLARED SDOPPIAMENTO

In Unit 2 we start to move away from a Classical way of working by creating Flared Sdoppiamento.

This technique creates lines that are more energetic and have a bursting dynamism.

I introduce the five sided piece, the ‘irregular pentagon’ which is a critical shape to employ where lines divide in rapid succession.

It is an essential shape to have in your tesserae toolbox – knowing when and how to use it (and when not to) is a very important step.

Which line to follow? This is a question that many students ask.

It’s easy to know the answer when the line is straight or moving in a simple curve. But what do you do when lines start to flare or move in two directions at once?  The old rule of 90º to the flow line no longer stands up!! In this lesson we work through a series of exercises to reframe how to steer your tesserae through your line without running off course.

LESSON 2 : THE POWER OF THE IRREGULAR PENTAGON

Irregular Pentagon Drawing Studio Shot

In Lesson 2 we introduce the irregular pentagon. This is a life changing tesserae shape that can help you to create more movement and energy in your andamento. We look at where this shape is needed and where it is not. It is incredibly useful when applied correctly and selectively.

The tendancy is to get over excited and to use it everywhere.. which creates more problems than it solves.

In this lesson we will unpack the how to and the how not to use this shape.

LESSON 3 : FLARED SDOPPIAMENTO DRAWING

Flared Sdoppiamento Drawing Studio Shot

In Lesson 3 we put our skills into practice in a Flared Sdoppiamento drawing expanding from one line into thirteen.

We learn to look ahead in the space and to plot out the andamento in a fluid way planning where the sdoppiamento will go. We use both trapzoidal shapes and irregular pentagons to complete the diagram to create a dynamic effect.

In Lesson 4 we cut and lay the tesserae to build the flared sdoppiamento sample growing from one line into thirteen.

We are using the direct on mesh method so that we can see the diagram underneath the tiling mesh.

I had my first art class in college, many, many years ago, unfortunately it wasn’t a good experience and I promised myself never to take an art class again. My dear friend and mentor Jacki Gran, a mosaic artist, suggested I take a class with you… despite my trepidation I signed up and it’s been a joyride.

Your mastery of the craft and your artistic talents are a beautiful foundation for learning techniques, understanding the art form, and acquiring an eye for color theory. I’m definitely on the elementary level, however, your patience, support, and encouragement coupled with your knowledge and experience makes the learning process fun, challenging and rewarding. I’ll be remiss not to add that my art (techniques) have improved greatly.

The design of the courses is structured with details and amazing resources; the involvement required and the easy-to-follow instructions are outstanding. Accessing the study guides and the class videos as often as I like are absolutely essential tools for me. For a slow learner like me, your courses are priceless.
