LESSON 1 : FOAM SPHERE DRAWING EXERCISE

LEVEL 2 UNIT 4 FOAM SPHERE DRAWING
Lesson 1 Foam Sphere Drawing

We start by explaining seveal fundamentals of how circles become ellipses and show how compression and expansion can be easily understood by creating simple line drawings on foam spheres.

Format: Video Tutorials

Difficulty: Low

LESSON 2 : ELLIPSE DRAWING EXERCISE

Lesson 2 Elliptical Drawing
Lesson 2 Ellipse Drawing

In Lesson 2 we work through the steps to transform a circle into sphere using a combination of vertical and horizontal ellipses.

We start by seperately hand drawing horizontal ellipses (similar to latitudinal lines) , then vertical ellipses (think longitudinal lines) before bringing these together.

Templates are supplied incase students find the drawing activity too tricky.

LESSON 3 : SPHERE TESSERAE DRAWING

Drawing Sphere Tesserae 1
Sphere Tesserae Drawing

In Lesson 3  we use our elliptical template as a framework to create a tesserae drawing of the sphere.

This relies on prior knowledge from Level 1 Unit 2 – Curves and Level 2 Unit 3 – Scaling.

LESSON 4 : SPHERE MOSAIC SAMPLE

Making Sphere Mosaic Sample
Sphere Mosaic Sample

In Lesson 4 we create the Sphere Mosaic Sample in a limited palette.

This is the most complex sample of Level 2 and contains almost 3 hours of video coverage to step students through the task systematically. This enables you to work at at your own pace or watch the placement of each and every tesserae.

I had my first art class in college, many, many years ago, unfortunately it wasn’t a good experience and I promised myself never to take an art class again. My dear friend and mentor Jacki Gran, a mosaic artist, suggested I take a class with you… despite my trepidation I signed up and it’s been a joyride.

Your mastery of the craft and your artistic talents are a beautiful foundation for learning techniques, understanding the art form, and acquiring an eye for color theory. I’m definitely on the elementary level, however, your patience, support, and encouragement coupled with your knowledge and experience makes the learning process fun, challenging and rewarding. I’ll be remiss not to add that my art (techniques) have improved greatly.

The design of the courses is structured with details and amazing resources; the involvement required and the easy-to-follow instructions are outstanding. Accessing the study guides and the class videos as often as I like are absolutely essential tools for me. For a slow learner like me, your courses are priceless.
