LEVEL 4 : THE VALUE OF VOLUME
OVERVIEW
Level 4: The Value of Volume is the fourth level in the Art of Andamento: Curriculum for Mosaic.
This Level brings together and extends skills learnt in Levels 2 and 3 in more complex investigations of stand alone objects that combine Colour Theory and Dynamic Andamento.
Your palette building will become more finely tuned and you can select to integrate larger tesserae and mixed media into your work.
Andamento is generated through the examination of the volume of the subject matter and brought to life through the manipulation of value, hue and chroma.

UNIT 1
GREYSCALE COFFEE POT
In Unit One we return to greyscale through observations of a Teapot or Coffeepot.
This study revisits the importance of value as well as continuing to apply and extend our andamento knowledge.
We develop two primary drawings
1. Value Drawing – Grouping areas of value in the image
2. Volume Drawing – Looking at the geometry of the form and imagining it in three dimensions – think ellipses and hexagons.
We also look a little more at reflection and how light reflects differently on different surfaces – flat, curved, even, uneven.

UNIT 2
TINTS AND SHADES SHELL
In Unit Two we revisit the use of Tints and Shades by using one hue family (5YR) to render a dimensional shell.
This task extends the skills developed in the Lemon study (Level 3 – Unit 2) with added complexity in the chosen form which has both concave and convex areas, a twist, high and low value, high and low chroma, and compressed and expanded areas.
The shell also connects to the Level 2 – Unit 4 Sphere Study in Compression and Expansion. We can see how the understanding of volume developed in that lesson is still relevant here in a realistic application.

UNIT 3
HARMONIOUS blend Leaves
In Unit Three we revisit the use of harmonious colour by using a analogous series of hues to render a Leaf.
This task extends the skills developed in the Pear study in Level 3 – Unit 3.
We work in a colour palette that moves through harmonious hues spanning yellow-orange through to green or blue green in different values.
This is the first exercise in Level 4 where we need a comparative values palette, consisting of a value scale for each hue in the harmonious selection.

UNIT 4
COMPLEMENTARY Colour lily
Unit Four brings the most challenging task of Level 4… the Lily.
Even though the lily is one object (plus a background) the flower itself has six petals each moving in a different direction. This is almost like six seperate objects as each has its own directional changes, and variations.
In this study students are asked to create a background of foliage in a complementary opposite colour.
