LEVEL 3 UNIT 2 : TINTS AND SHADES

In Unit 2, we continue to explore the Munsell Colour System by investigating the range of singular hue families. You’ll see how small shifts in light and dark can change the way a surface turns, recedes or comes forward.

We start with a gradation working in one hue and three values, before exploring the Chromatic scales of yellow and yellow orange.

The study for this unit is a Lemon, where you apply your knowldege of andamento and value to model form while keeping your colour choice controlled and deliberate.

We continue our journey into colour space, further exploring value, tints and shades and chromatic range. The colour theory is beautifully supported with colourful animated graphics which helps students to more easily understand colour relationships.

In this lesson we explore value by through the creation of a small gradation sample using one hue in three values.
Students learn about key factors to consider when building gradations to ensure smooth transitions.

In Lesson 2 we begin planning our Lemon Mosaic study. We revise ellipses and understand how we can create the illusion of volume with andamento. This is a strong starting point before bringing in the additional power of colour.

This fun exercise teaches students to see the variation in value and chroma within singular hues through exploring the chromatic scales of Hues 5Y and 5YR.

In Lesson 4 students allocate values to the subject by using a value card before completing a palette planning exercise in eight values.

Our final lesson of Unit 2 involves the building of our Lemon Mosaic study.
Students combine andamento, hue, chroma and value to create the effect of a three dimensional lemon.
