In Level 2 Unit 5 students learn how to to integrate the different skills developed so far throughout Level 2.
As students begin to work more intuitively, they find that multiple skills and techniques are used within every mosaic, integrated in subtle ways to convey the subject.

INTRODUCTION : IDENTIFYING THE MAIN SHAPES OF THE EYE
In this lesson we increase the level of difficulty by starting from a photograph instead of a template where the flow lines of the mosaic need to be ‘found’ within the image.
We step through a sequence, first identifying the main areas and shapes and where the form changes direction, essentially ‘creating’ the template from the photo.
This is a real world process and one that will is utilised from Level 3 onwards where form and andamenti for all mosaic studies is created by the student from imagery and no longer from a prepared template.

CHAPTERS 2 & 3 : EYE ANDAMENTI DRAWING
In Lesson 2, Chapters 2 & 3 we draw our andamenti line working from the contours of the face in the image as well as from the line drawing from chapter one.
This step asks us to look at where to apply sdoppiamenti, where to flare and where to scale our line within the simpler template drawing.

CHAPTERS 4, 5 ,6 : EYE TESSERAE DRAWING
In Lesson 1, Chapters 4, 5 & 6 we use or prior knowledge of sdoppiamento, flaring and scaling to draw the tesserae into the andamenti drawing.

LESSON 2: EYE MOSAIC SAMPLE
In Lesson 2 we create the Eye Mosaic Sample in a limited palette.
I use the same palette of cool blues greens. If you prefer not to use this palette (as it does make the eye slightly reptilian), I suggest you use white tesserae on a black substrate to create a simple and clear outcome with the dark interstices being representive of the creases in the face.
This sample is made in a 3 hour video tutorial.

I had my first art class in college, many, many years ago, unfortunately it wasn’t a good experience and I promised myself never to take an art class again. My dear friend and mentor Jacki Gran, a mosaic artist, suggested I take a class with you… despite my trepidation I signed up and it’s been a joyride.
Your mastery of the craft and your artistic talents are a beautiful foundation for learning techniques, understanding the art form, and acquiring an eye for color theory. I’m definitely on the elementary level, however, your patience, support, and encouragement coupled with your knowledge and experience makes the learning process fun, challenging and rewarding. I’ll be remiss not to add that my art (techniques) have improved greatly.
The design of the courses is structured with details and amazing resources; the involvement required and the easy-to-follow instructions are outstanding.
