LEVEL 1 : UNIT 1 - LINEAR PATTERNS

UNIT OVERVIEW

In Unit 1 we examine the effect of using aligned and offset interstices in linear patterns.

Understanding where to align and offset interstices in mosaic, and the effect this has on the way the design is read is fundamental.

These approaches are normally seen together in different areas of the same mosaic.

This unit addresses aligned and offset interstices in seperate exercises before combining them into one study.

Both of these styles fall under the umbrella term of Opus Tessellatum which describes pavement mosaics created with four sided tesserae.

The term Opus refers to a way of working. Different ways of working are referred to as the Mosaic Opera.

LEVEL 1: A TASTE OF THE CLASSICS

Earlier this year, I stumbled across Art of Andamento earlier this year as I searched the Internet for resources to better understand the concept of “andamento”.

I was excited to see what this new course was being developed by Caitlin and her team.

With the recent release of Level 1, I am DELIGHTED with the content! The information is presented in well thought out, easy to follow steps in the process of learning mosaic art.   As a seasoned healthcare provider and curious craft person, I have spent incalculable hours watching videos and buying books to learn new things. However, often I would have to scroll through 30-40 minutes of a video to try to find the information, or the books just didn’t include what I was looking for.   Caitlin and her team have created a well thought out, step by step curriculum for new or experienced artists or hobbyists.

The videos are presented in very digestible bites. Not too long, not too short but just right! The additional resource packet is chock full of professionally created templates, and examples. She includes resources on how to find materials and tool for success in the medium of mosaics.

I love that Caitlin spends time on the history of this art form, and her explanations of the “why” as she progresses in the lessons. Thus far I have had several “ah-hah” moments as I reflect on how I started in this art form and where I have struggled.

She has done an amazing job at breaking down the steps to starting in mosaics. The videos are of such quality that they are clearly professionally produced. The sound quality is perfect, and multi direction camera angles make it seem like you are sitting at the table with Caitlin in her studio.

I appreciate her acknowledgement that the “hand of the maker” is good to have in your art. I am really enjoying the class so far and looking forward to “making’.

Thanks so much for putting this together wonderful class!
