LEVEL 3 : COLOUR THEORY IMMERSION
OVERVIEW
Andamento Level 3 completes the core sequence of the Art of Andamento curriculum by introducing a clear and practical approach to colour. This course is designed for students who already have a natural feel for colour but want to understand why and how it works.
Using the Munsell Colour System, we break colour down into the dimensions of Value, Hue and Chroma, giving you a structure you can use indefinitely. The goal is simple: to move from guessing to knowing, so you can make confident, intentional colour decisions that support your andamento and overall design.
While Value and Hue are present in every stage of the course, we also place focus on Chroma, an often overlooked dimension that can either enhance a mosaic or quietly work against it.
Each unit includes a technical sample to explore a key colour principle, followed by a more focussed study where you apply that knowledge through the use of both andamento and colour theory.
UNIT 1 : VALUE & THE COLOUR TREE
AVAILABLE NOW
In this unit we introduce the Munsell Colour Tree and the three dimensions of colour Hue, Value and Chroma.
In particular we focus on Value, because it is the dimension of colour that does the heavy lifting. It is famously quoted that colour gets all the credit.. but value does all the work!
Before colour can work well, light and dark need to make sense. By simplifying colour down to light and dark, you develop stronger control over form and avoid common pitfalls that can flatten or confuse an image.
The technical sample isolates Value and demonstrates how hue and chroma play tricks on you.. while the extended study uses value and andamento to build a resolved form with a light source.
UNIT 2 : TINTS AND SHADES
AVAILABLE NOW
Next, we take a single hue family and explore its range. You’ll see how small shifts in light and dark can change the way a surface turns, recedes or comes forward.
We start with a gradation working in one hue and three values, before exploring the Chromatic scales of yellow and yellow orange.
The study for this unit is a Lemon, where you apply your knowldege of andamento and value to model form while keeping your colour choice controlled and deliberate.
UNIT 3 : HARMONIOUS COLOUR
RELEASED AUGUST
In Unit 3 we look at how colours sit together. Working with a selection of harmonious (analogous) hues, you will learn how to build colour harmony in a gradation moving through three hues.
Our study for this unit is the Pear, which brings together value based andamento with a planned palette of harmonious colour.
UNIT 4 : COMPLEMENTARY OPPOSITE COLOUR
In the final unit, we introduce complementary colours and learn how to use them with control.
Opposites can create visual energy and excitement but they can also overwhelm if not handled carefully.
You’ll practice balancing these relationships in a radial gradation creating the effect of illumination.
The final study of the Figs, integrates both colour theory and andamento into a luscious, resolved and colourful outcome.
