LEVEL 2 : UNIT 3 - SCALING & SPIRALLING
In Level 2 Unit 3 students learn the contemporary technique of scaling.
This involves changing the size of the tesserae from petite to heavy and back again to create the illusion of heaviness and lightness in lines in the mosaic.
This is in contrast to classical techniques, where in general the tesserae stay the same size within different areas of the design.

LESSON 1 : USING SCALE DRAWING EXERCISE
We start by revising the use of scale in classical works before completing a drawing exercise which gradually introduces scale firstly between the lines and secondly within the line.

LESSON 2 : SCALED SPIRAL DRAWING
In Lesson 2 we create a drawing of a snails shell. We start in the very centre with very small pieces and gradually increase the scale of the tesserae as we add a second and third row.
In this example the small row remains small throughout the drawing, which helps set up visual contrast in between the small, medium and large rows.

LESSON 3 : SCALED KORU DRAWING
In Lesson 3 we develop a Scaled Koru Drawing. This is a fabulous shape to explore this technique as it grows from petite to heavy and then back again, allowing for distinctly small, medium and large lines to emerge.
We continue to use both four and five sided sdoppiamenti to help the line fluidly diverge as it grows.

LESSON 4 : SCALED SPIRAL MOSAIC
In Lesson 4 we create the Scaled Spiral Mosaic in a limited palette of Mexican Smalti.
We are using the direct on mesh method so that we can see the diagram underneath the tiling mesh.

LESSON 5 : SCALED KORU MOSAIC
In Lesson 5 we challenge ourselves with the more complex but also more engaging Scaled Koru Mosaic Sample.
This is the sample where we can see scale in action while still practicing curves, and sdoppiamento.
We are using the direct on mesh method so that we can see the diagram underneath the tiling mesh.

I had my first art class in college, many, many years ago, unfortunately it wasn’t a good experience and I promised myself never to take an art class again. My dear friend and mentor Jacki Gran, a mosaic artist, suggested I take a class with you… despite my trepidation I signed up and it’s been a joyride.
Your mastery of the craft and your artistic talents are a beautiful foundation for learning techniques, understanding the art form, and acquiring an eye for color theory. I’m definitely on the elementary level, however, your patience, support, and encouragement coupled with your knowledge and experience makes the learning process fun, challenging and rewarding. I’ll be remiss not to add that my art (techniques) have improved greatly.
The design of the courses is structured with details and amazing resources; the involvement required and the easy-to-follow instructions are outstanding.
