Inspired by the extraordinary turquoise mosaic artefacts of Ancient Mexico, this Andamento Appetiser explores the symbolism, materials and radial design structures found throughout Mesoamerican cultures including the Maya, Aztec and Teotihuacan traditions.
In this low difficulty project, students will create a contemporary mosaic interpretation of a ceremonial turquoise disc inspired by ancient pectorals, ritual shields and symbolic cosmic imagery. Through the process, students are introduced to basic andamento, segmented pattern building, material contrast and the symbolic role of mosaic in Mesoamerican culture.
This project encourages experimentation with rich turquoise palettes, pyrite inspired centres, smalti, porcelain, beads and found materials, while also exploring the powerful imagery of the Feathered Serpent, one of the most enduring symbols in Ancient Mexico.
Through step by step instructions, templates, tesserae drawings and historical references, students will learn how to structure a radial mosaic design and create movement flowing outward from a central focal point.
